BIG-IQ setups that support an upgrade process to version 6.0.1

The current setup of BIG-IQ Centralized Management affects the upgrade process to BIG-IQ version 6.0.1. Your current BIG-IQ system must be version 5.2 or later to successfully upgrade to version 6.0.1. The following system configurations support the upgrade to version 6.0.1:

  • BIG-IQ system configuration includes a data collection device cluster.

  • BIG-IQ system configuration does not include a data collection device cluster.

BIG-IQ version 5.2 system setups

To upgrade your BIG-IQ system from version 5.2 to version 6.0.1, use the upgrade process that supports your system's configuration.

BIG-IQ system does not include a data collection device cluster

BIG-IQ Centralized Management: Upgrading a Version 5.2, 5.3, 5.4, or 6.0.0 System without a Data Collection Device Cluster to BIG-IQ Version 6.0.1

This example represents a BIG-IQ setup that includes a high-availability (HA) pair of BIG-IQ systems. During the upgrade, the BIG-IQ services to BIG-IP devices are unavailable until the upgrade process is complete. This can result in a downtime of services. The amount of downtime depends on the size of your system's setup. BIG-IQ services resume when the primary device is upgraded and restarted.

BIG-IQ system includes a data collection device cluster with minimal downtime

BIG-IQ Centralized Management: Upgrading a Version 6.0 System with a Data Collection Device Cluster to BIG-IQ 6.0.1 with Minimal Downtime

This figure represents a BIG-IQ setup that includes a high-availability (HA) pair of BIG-IQ systems and a data collection device (DCD) cluster that contains three devices. Each device in the DCD cluster continues to collect data until you start the upgrade process. Data collection for all devices resumes only after all devices in the DCD cluster are upgraded and restarted. For this example, there are three data collection devices: one has already completed the upgrade to version 6.0.1, one is undergoing an upgrade to version 6.0.1, and one is collecting data as version 6.0.
Note: This upgrade procedure with minimal downtime supports BIG-IQ system setups that include a minimum of three data collection devices.

BIG-IQ version 5.3 system setups

To upgrade your BIG-IQ system from version 5.3 to version 6.0.1, use the upgrade process that supports your system's configuration.

This example represents a BIG-IQ setup that includes a high-availability (HA) pair of BIG-IQ systems and a data collection device (DCD) cluster. During the upgrade, all devices in the DCD cluster are deactivated until they are all upgraded. During this time, data is not collected from the managed BIG-IP devices. Data collection resumes when all of the devices in the DCD cluster are upgraded and restarted.

BIG-IQ version 6.0 setups

To upgrade your BIG-IQ system from version 6.0 to version 6.0.1, use the upgrade process that supports your setup and meets your downtime requirements.

BIG-IQ system does not include a data collection device cluster
