Manual Chapter: Guidelines for DC Power in the 6400

The 6400 series platforms are available with DC power supplies. This chapter describes how to install these platforms. The following connector specifications apply to this unit.
Ground studs
The ground studs on this unit are 5/8-inch poles with #10-32 threads and an outer diameter of 1/4-inch. You can use these poles as single grounding or double grounding points.
Terminal blocks
Thread size for the terminal block screws is #6-32 (0.138"). The maximum width per opening is about 0.41 inches. The Y or ring terminal must conform to these sizes.
Warning: Before you begin to work with one of these platforms, refer to the environmental warnings provided in Chapter 8, Working with Environmental Guidelines for the IP Application Switch Platform. In particular, please review the Guidelines for DC-powered equipment. You should also review any safety requirements defined by your network operations center (NOC).
There are detailed guidelines for installing the platform in a rack described in Chapter 2, Installing the IP Application Switch Platform. Please follow the guidelines described in Chapter 2 when you install a 6400 DC powered unit in a rack.
After the platform is installed in a rack, you can wire the platform to the DC power source. When you connect the DC power source, F5 Networks recommends that you follow the safety requirements defined for your network operations center (NOC).
Figure 8.1, shows the terminal layout of the DC power supply terminal block on the back of the platform.

Place the screws and terminal block in a safe place.
After you wire the terminal block, you should replace this cover.
After you remove the terminal block cover, the terminal block is exposed as shown in Figure 8.2. The ground lug and the terminal poles have the following specifications:

After you are sure the power is off, connect the ground wire to the ground stud or studs. The ground studs are #10-32 thread and can be used as single grounding or double grounding points.

After you connect the ground wire, connect the negative DC power lead to the -48V terminal on the terminal block. Thread the wiring through the grommet in the terminal block cover.

Next, connect the return wire to the RTN terminal on the terminal block.

After you turn on the DC power source, press the Check button on the LCD to begin booting the system. For additional information on using the LCD panel, see Introducing the LCD panel.
