After you review the hardware requirements and read the prerequisite Local Traffic ManagerTM documentation, you can begin the process of preparing and upgrading the system.
Before you being the process of upgrading the system, you must first verify that the current configuration is valid. To do this, complete the following procedure on the BIG-IP® version 4.x system.
Warning: F5 Networks strongly recommends that you perform the following steps in the order they are presented, and only on the standby unit in a redundant system.
Verify the syntax of the bigip.conf file by typing the following command:
Verify the syntax of the bigip_base.conf file by typing the following command
Review the /var/log/bigd and /var/log/bigip logs.
Resolve any reported issues.
Note that when you take the system offline or disconnect it from the network, all pool members and nodes are listed as down in the bigd log.
b vlan list
b self list
Print the results from these commands.
This output provides you with a useful reference in the event that you need to manually configure the upgraded system.
Once you have verified the configuration, create a backup copy of your BIG-IP version 4.x systems user configuration set (UCS) file.
After you create a backup copy of your current configuration, perform the following steps to install the Local Traffic Manager software.
Locate the base registration key for the Local Traffic Manager.
The base registration key is a 27-character string that lets the license server know which F5 products you are entitled to license.
Note: You cannot complete the installation without this key. If you do not already have a base registration key, contact the Sales group (
Review the Local Traffic Manager release notes specific to the version to which you are upgrading for hardware requirements.

Once you install the Local Traffic Manager software, you can configure the general properties and user administration passwords.
After you license the system and install Local Traffic Manager software, you can perform the initial system configuration.
Important: If, before you reboot in step 8 of the following procedure, you see a prompt to run the OTCU, select N. You run the OTCU in the next section.
In the navigation pane, click System and then Platform.
The Platform screen opens.
In the Host Name box, type the host name that you used for BIG-IP system 4.x system.
In the Root Account box, in the User Administration section, type the password for the root account.
In the Admin Account box, type the password for the administrative account.
Click Next.
The Basic Network Configuration screen opens.
Click Finished.
